The auto's have a smaller turbo. Quicker spool up time is DC reasoning I think.

Thanks for the reply, fellas. My best friend was set to buy a 2001 with the 6 speed and heard this rumor. I told him I would check into it for him. After what I read about the chewed up fan blades in these turbos ... I think I would wait until next year to buy one so they get the bugs worked out. Thanks again, I knew I could count on y'all !

The Auto definitely has a smaller turbo housing and early autos had problems from same. Mexican Holset factory had start-up problems that are sorted out now as well. The 6 speed manual turbo has a decent housing on the Holset HX35 and Dodge limits boost to 26.? psi. It can peak out at about 36+ psi. by modifying the computer sense line. The Auto is about 20 psi and de-powers the fuel on shift points to save the anemic auto from high torque (full throttle) shifts like when towing a 5th. Allison for 2003 was scrapped, but a 48RE will replace 47RE in 2003 - I hope it has a converter with 10% slippage instead of the current 20% or it will not make it. We have to wait and see. The 24 V Cummins is guaranteed by contract to 2007 - I have an E-mail from Cummins. Common rail injection coming 2003 that will cut noise to that of a gasser unless over about 2200 RPM? The Mecedes diesel is going into the over 1 ton models that Dodge is going to compete with the Ford F550 etc.
