I was speaking to guy today that had a 12 valve version and he said that the 12valve version was more easily "pumped up" (for less coin too) What are your thoughts? I seriously thinking of trading up my, to Quote someone on this forum, my "grocery getter" 1500 gasser to a cummings Dodge. I need to get over a hurdle of aquiring another truck payment. Once I accomplish that, I'll have one! Thanks for any info posted... Troy

As BAD said, the ultimate horsepower pumps are those from 1996-1998.5 (BAD you missed a year) in a truck with a manual transmission. These are the 215hp pumps. No worries though, you can crank so pretty big HP number out of any of the 94-98.5 Cummins, but 96-98.5 stick or auto would be the preferred years in my opinion. FWIW - I have never heard of a 16 valve 6BT Cummins

Why, does the 12V version do more, (or can do more) rated at 215hp when the 24V motor is rated at 235hp (HO at 245hp stick's only)? Is the explanation an easy one? My thinking, more valves= more breathing, more breathing, more power? Is this incorrect? Wouldn't today's engins be more fuel efficent than yesterdays? Thanks, Lonely gasser........

Posts: 232 (05/01/02 19:16:08) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	The 215hp 12 valve engine can produce more horsepower for one simple reason, the P7100 pump. The P7100 pump is extremely powerful for our little 5.9l engines and it has a ton of potential. Even though the 24v is rated at high HP stock the pump is not as powerful as the P7100. I'm not trying to say that big HP cannot be made with a 24v motor it is just a little more difficult (read: cost more money). The newer engines are less fuel efficient, on average, and it has to do mainly with EPA cutting emissions requirements and force the production of a cleaner running motor. The early 24v (98.5-99) were a little harder on fuel than the newer ones, at least this is what I have noticed. No matter what Cummins you buy, 89-93 12v, 94-98.5 12v, or 98.5+ 24v you will be amazed at the performance of the truck especially with a few dollars spent on some upgrades. Good luck in your search.

The P7100 pump. is this a fuel pump? What kind of pump is it? Can this pump be added to the 24V motor? Or, is the P7100 pump a designation for the 12V block? Since I've started to read posting on the Dodge diesel, I've noticed alot of you call them "Pumps" Again, thanks for your paitents on this subject. I want to be more knowledgable than the salesperson when I go in to order my new truck. (I've almost talked myself into the $700+/mo truck payment now) Troy

Posts: 46 (06/04/02 09:55:37) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I do not have a 12 valve engine but upgrading my 24 valve engine was plugging in a box and changing the wastegate fitting. The computer still controls the engine great and my boost, temps went down and power is much better. Find it hard to believe that encouraging people to crank thier pumps up is better than plugging in a "known" value box. The 24 valve boxes are all over now and you can dial in on the fly how much power you want. TST products makes one for the 12 valve (adjustable) but I don't think the power is as available as the newer units. I am sure the 12 valve engines are great. I just don't agree on 12 valve engines being better based on power enhancement ease. Windecker

Posts: 0 (06/05/02 21:34:39) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I got my CTD! A 2002 Dodge, 2500, 4x4 LB QC, H.O. 6sp, forest green. Beauty! Man what a difference! Soooo much more power! Don't think I need to do anything to the engin right now! Concentrating on replacing the P.O.S. stock infinity stereo system. IT SUCKS! New system going in This saturday (the 8th) Alpine CD/XM ready deck, 2 amps,6.5" Polk Audio w/tweets up front & 6.5" polk in the rear, and a JL Audio StealthBox (12" sub) in the center seat section. After that, working on my tripple guage pillar mount, for EGT, and boost for sure, the third guage is still up for discussion. Leaning towards fuel pressure, but not sure it's do-able in the cab? still kind of researching that. Any suggestions for the third guage? Will fuel pressure be okay? I know from reading posts that monitering it is important. Troy

Posts: 46 (06/06/02 03:59:12) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	First, congrats on your new truck. I hope you like it and have many years of service from it. If able, tow something, pull something, load it down or what ever. The engine likes work for break in. Also, no extended idling. The temp of the engine it too low at idle and you could coak up the valves and bend one. You can contact Cummins directly and ask them about how to run and break in the engine, they are very nice people. An exhaust brake (I have the US Gear one) is very helpful in engine breaking as diesels have little engine brake affect. The second thing the brake does is increase the temp at idle so you can idle for extended times with out hurting anything. It also warms the engine up much faster in the winter. An unusual smell at stop signs and such goes away after about 900 miles but returns after each oil change, this is normal for this engine. Not sure what to recommend for the gauges. I have the Exhaust temp and boost gauges, I did not feel the need for anything else personally. With the 6 speed there are not any trans temps to watch. Not so sure what looking at fuel pressure gets you? My exhaust temp at full power and fully loaded would be about 1250 degrees and boost about 18 PSI (assuming the gauges are correct) and after the Power Edge EZ box the boost went to about 25 PSI and the temp dropped to about 950 degrees maximum. Turtbo responce was much faster and power is better. If you are not towing, not sure you would really need any more power but that is a personal choice. I have the 6 speed as well but mine is not the H.O. engine. Anyway best to you and good luck.

I don't let it idle long anyhow, but now I have a sense of why not to. I will tow, but not often. I tow my jeep to the hills for runs, as it's geared for off-road use, not hwy use. It only does 60mph max! and the motor is screamin at that speed, so I tow everywhere now (when going to a run). Thanks for the info, I need to run, some damn operator don't know what he's doing and caused an alarm..... Later...
